Statistics of Korea's Creative Content Industry

The number of Korean creative content companies in 2012 was 111,587, representing a 2.1% decrease from the previous year. Based on the number of companies in each market, the music market had 37,116 companies, making up 33.3% of the total number of companies in the entire creative content industry. The number of workers in 2012 stood at 611,437, showing a 1.1% increase from the year before. Also, the number of workers in the publishing market stood at 198,262, accounting for the largest proportion of total workers in the creative content industry. In 2012, the creativecontent industry recorded a growth of 5.2%, or \87,271.6 billion. The publishing market generated the largest profits of \21,097.3 billion, accounting for 24.2% of total profits in the entire creative content industry. Also, in 2012, export earnings reached $4,611.51 million, an increase of 7.2% from the year before, while import earnings were recorded at $1,673.79 million, a 9.4% decrease from the year before. As a result, the difference between export earnings and import earnings were recorded at $2,937.72 million, representing higher exports over imports.

Games Market

In 2012, the number of gaming companies was 16,189 and the number of workers stood at 95,051. The games market recorded \9,752.5 billionin sales, with export earnings of $2,638.92 million, and lesser import earnings of $179.14 million. The number of companies in the gaming market decreased by an average of 13.8% from 29,293 in 2008, to 16,189 in 2012. Also, the gaming market recorded an average growth rate of 14.9% in sales, and an average declining rate of 0.1% in terms of number of workers. In 2012, export earnings experienced the largest growth, with an annual average growth rate of 24.6%.

 

Manhwa (Korean Comics) Market

In 2012, the number of companies in Korea’s Manhwa market was 8,856, and the number of workers stood at 10,161. The Manhwa market recorded \758.5billionin sales with export earnings of $17.11 million and import earnings of $5.29 million. The number of companies in the Manhwa market declined from 10,180 in 2008 to 8,856 in 2012, marking a difference of 1,324 companies. Although the number of workers in the Manhwa market has been decreasing, sales, the productivity of added value, and the number of companies, have all experienced rapid growth since 2011.
 

Music Market

In 2012, the number of companies in Korea’s music market was 37,116, while the number of workers stood at 78,402. The music market recorded \3,994.9 billionin sales with export earnings of $235.10 million and import earnings of $12.99 million. As a result of an average declining rate of 0.3%, the number of companies decreased from 37,637 in 2008 to 37,116 in 2012. The number of workers, on the other hand, increased by 4.2%. Also, the music market showed an 11.3% increase in sales, representing a constant growth in exports: $16.47 million in 2008, $31.27 million in 2009, $83.26 million in 2010, $196.11 million in 2011, and $235.10 million in 2012.
 

Animation Market

The number of companies in the animation market was recorded at 341 companies, with a total number of 4,503 workers. Its sales marked \521 billion, while exports were recorded at $112.54 million and imports at $6.26 million. From 2008 to 2012, the number of animation-related companies grew at an annual average rate of 5.4% from 276 companies to 341 companies. Also, the animation market enjoyed a growth rate of 6.5% in sales from \404.8 billionin 2008 to \521 billionin 2012.
 

Advertisement Market

In 2012, the number of companies in the advertisement market was 5,804 while the number of workers was recorded at 36,424. The advertisement market posted \12,483.8 billionin sales with export earnings of $97.49 million and import earnings of $779.94 million. Having enjoyed an annual average growth rate of 5.0% since 2008, the number of companies in the advertisement market grew from 4,767 in 2008 to 5,804 in 2012. Also, the number of companies in the advertisement market increased by 1,037, from 4,767 in 2008 to 5,804 in 2012, marking an annual average growth rate of 3.2% from 2008-2012. Sales and the number of workers also showed an average increase of 7.6% and 4.4%, respectively. Sales showed the largest average growth rate of all at 61.8%.
 

Character Market

In 2012, the number of companies in Korea’s character market was 1,992 with a total of 26,897 workers. The character market recorded \7,517.6 billionin sales, with exports of $416.45 million, and imports of $179.43 million. The number of companies increased 7.0% from 1,521 in 2008 to 1,992 in 2012. Additionally, sales and the number of workers grew by 10.2% and 6.3%, respectively. Sales experienced the biggest growth, with an average growth rate of 16.2%. On the other hand, import earnings showed a constant decline from 2008 and represented a 1.7% decrease from 2012.
